A word on plural possessives

A recent conversation instigated this post:

The word in question was “girls” used in the phrase “girls night out.”  I think this one is a matter of use. I personally wasn’t seeing the word as being possessive, rather merely plural as there were multiple “girls” spending time together. However, another in the group (can you tell we were a group of smarty pants) insinuated that the word should be used in the plural possessive (girls’). I stated I didn’t think so; she said, I might have to fight you on this one and look it up. (We went to high school together and had the same amazing English/Journalism teacher.)

I’m still not sure who is correct or if we both are! 😀
