Thy Will be Undone (Part 1)

Thy Will be Undone – Part 1:

Free Will vs. God’s Will…

Today, like every day, is the first day of the rest of my life. I am ever grateful for the opportunity to start fresh, daily. In a past life – while walking in the world and not with the Lord (Christ Jesus) – I did not have peace in this knowledge. Come to think of it, I don’t recall ever having this understanding during certain years.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (St. John, 14:27, Holy Bible KJV)

I digress. Today…

There are two things that I am pretty cognizant of: being at peace and not being at peace. Anyone who walks in peace (and has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit), can discern the difference between these two states. However, if your life stops resembling that peace – STOP what you’re doing, take inventory and pray!

If the results surprise you, they shouldn’t, because no matter how closely aligned you believe you are with God, somewhere within you resides a crack in your foundation. What is this crack you may ask? It’s called Free Will. Yes, Free Will…I’m sure you’ve heard of it!

The dictionary definition of Free Will:

1. the human will regarded as free from restraints, compulsions, or any antecedent conditions; freedom of decision or choice.

Walking a thin line...
Walking a thin line…

2. the doctrine that people have this: opposed to determinism (doctrine that one’s choice of action is not free rather determined by a sequence of causes, independent of his will).   (HIS will?)  (<– I inserted this not the dictionary however I did find it ironic…I also provided an abridged definition of determinism for your benefit.)

What does free will have to do with my spiritual walk you may wonder. Allow me to direct you to Biblical references in support of this discussion:

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9, Holy Bible, KJV)

As one who walks with, and in, the Spirit of the Lord, I am supposed to be aware of His presence and adhere to God’s will, in and for my life. Technically, we are supposed to get out of our own way and let God have sovereign reign over us.

As stated in Psalm 119:30, “I have chosen the way of truth; thy judgments have I laid before me.”  In other words, when we submit to God and accept salvation through Christ, we opt to allow God’s decree (this is what the use of judgment in the Hebrew means here) reign over our lives. This is obedience and obedience keeps us on the path He intends for us.

“You will say to me then, ‘Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?’ But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?” (Romans 9:19-21, Holy Bible, KJV)

Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit this should be easy, right? The HS is there to guide us, so that we never stray off God’s intended path for us and make mistakes, right? Yes…UNLESS we step into a crack in the wall, called Free Will…

  2. Hi Stacey,
Quite frankly, I don’t care what people say, I care what my Creator has shared and that is that there are two rules for my life. I must love God with all of my heart, mind, and soul, and secondly love my neighbor, brother, others as myself. Covers a multitude, I’d say!

I find it interesting that all of the 10 commandments fit into this small package very nicely.
4 laws refer to loving God, and 6 rules for our treatment of one another. It’s profoundly simple and simply profound. Man will always seek a lower source for answers, for example, other men. I go right to the top for my reason to live, work, and play.

    Cheers, Don
