Ancient Paths

Photo: S. Louiso

I took this photo, in Rome, Italy, January 2008. This stone path is outside of the Coliseum and leads around it to the Arc and ruins. I loved the feel of walking on those stones and the earthy smell; the light you see glinting is how the sun naturally radiates from them.

I see this ancient path as a right of passage in a sense: How many millions of people have walked this path to get somewhere? How many millions of people have sat along it and watched others, how many lives were lost there in battle? Being in a place with that much history truly gives one a perspective like no other, at least for me. My trip to Rome was a life changing event solely because I could smell, feel and step on, history.
